The Sustainable Initiatives Plan addresses environmental responsibility focused on Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions from transportation, urban development and other energy consuming activities. The Sustainable Initiatives Plan identifies increased bicycle and pedestrian transportation as a strategy to reduce car use for short, local trips. Walking and biking to school, for local shopping, and other trips reduces the short car trips that pollute the most.
The Climate Action Plan reports that 19 percent of citywide CO2 emissions are from commuting, meaning that the more safely and conveniently San Matean's can walk, bicycle and use transit, the greater the climate benefits.
The Draft General Plan includes strong policies promoting bicycling downtown, improved bicycle access across major roadways, and better bicycle connections to schools and recreational areas.
