Breaking Ground in the Desert
Alta Designs the Amargosa Creek Trailhead & Pathway
Four years ago, citizens and community leaders in Lancaster, California began working on a plan
for a recreation trail along Amargosa Creek. The plan was completed in 2002, and in October of 2004, Alta Planning + Design
began designing and implementing the first phase of the Amargosa Creek Pathway. This multi-use path will provide new
opportunities for recreation and an off-street link between the new Antelope Valley Fairgrounds and the rest of the
city.
The City of Lancaster wants to have the trail constructed by the end of July 2005. Alta met this challenge by taking
the project from concept sketches to a complete set of bid documents in three months. The project went out to bid in
early February, and construction is scheduled to begin in early March.
The project includes a trailhead on the site of the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds and one mile of pathway between
Avenue I and Avenue H, with a rest area and access point to the adjacent neighborhood. The trailhead design is
complete with picnic tables, auto and bicycle parking, and a restroom. The trail site is on the fringe of the Mojave
Desert; the warm climate and desert soils made selection of plant materials and site furnishings a challenge. Trail
users will enjoy images of desert wildlife cast into the concrete benches along the trail, and the shade of the trees
at the trailhead and rest area. Asphalt
is the primary pathway surface, but the portions of the path in the floodplain of the creek will be constructed of
concrete to reduce the need for maintenance and repair caused by repeated flood events. A decomposed granite path
will parallel the asphalt path between Avenues I and H for runners or pedestrians preferring a softer surface.

George Hudson or Designer Mike Rose in our Portland office.

Menlo Park Adopts Bicycle Plan
The City of Menlo Park, California recently adopted its first Bicycle Development Plan,
prepared by Alta Planning + Design. Menlo Park is already known as a bicycle-friendly community - the city has about
nine times as many bicycle commuters as the state average, and serves as the gateway to some of the most popular
recreational cycling roads on the San Francisco peninsula.
The City's goals in developing a comprehensive bicycle plan were to identify projects that would make bicycling safer and
more attractive to cyclists of all age levels and abilities, and to encourage less-experienced cyclists to try commuting
or shopping by bicycle. The plan focuses on connecting the city's destinations - residential neighborhoods, schools,
parkland along the San Francisco Bay, the downtown area, the city's many high-tech business and research centers, and
a major commuter rail station - with an emphasis on neighborhood routes that utilize Menlo Park's network of quiet,
tree-lined streets as an alternate to heavy-traffic arterials.
To develop the route network, Alta worked closely with local cyclists and the city's Bicycle Commission, and Alta
staff led Commissioners on a weekend ride to survey many of the potential routes. The final Bicycle Plan recommends
an expansion of the city's bike lane network and over 16 miles of new neighborhood bike routes, along with a variety
of parking, signage, and other amenities to make bicycling safer and more convenient. Following its adoption by the
City Council in December, the Bicycle Development Plan received some positive press when a reporter from the local
newspaper left her car at home for a day and rode some of the newly-recommended neighborhood routes. The City is
wasting no time implementing the plan, and has recently applied for TDA Article 3 funding for three of
the recommended priority projects.

Brett Hondorp in our Berkeley office.
