San Francisco Shared-Lane Pavement Marking Study Alta Planning + Design and the San Francisco Bicycle Program are pleased to announce the completion of the San Francisco Shared Lane Marking Study (February 2004). This report reflects several years of effort to address the need for a marking to improve safety and functionality on streets without bicycle lanes. This study was accepted by the California Traffic Control Devices Committee (CTCDC), which will be considering approval of the recommended shared lane marking as an optional marking for Class III Bikeways (a.k.a. signed shared roadways). Draft language (available shortly) for the optional marking - size, location, proper usage - will also be forwarded to the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for inclusion in the MUTCD. Trinity County is located in the remote reaches of northwestern California between the Sacramento Valley and the Redwood Coast. The County encompasses the southern tip of the Cascade Range and is bounded by Humboldt County to the west, Mendocino and Tehema Counties to the south, Shasta County to the east, and Siskiyou County to the north. The main purpose of the Plan is to encourage the development of a unified bicycle system throughout Trinity County that serves the needs of bicycle commuters and recreational bicyclists with connections to other regional non-motorized systems. Recommended projects contained within this plan will be given priority for various State and federal funding sources programmed through the Trinity County Transportation Commission (TCTC). Download the final draft of the plan. - 8.5 MB .pdf file | | PC users: Right-click the link and "Save Link/Target as...". San Francisco Bicycle Program Supplemental Design Guidelines The San Francisco Department of Parking and Traffic (DPT) Bicycle Program has contracted with Alta Planning + Design to update the 1997 San Francisco Bicycle Plan. As a part of this effort we are developing a Supplemental Design Guidelines package for adoption as part of the 2003-2004 Bicycle Master Plan update. These design concepts are intended to supplement the bikeway design guidelines for typical bikeway situations provided in Caltrans Highway Design Manual Chapter 1000, the AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities, and the MUTCD 2000 Part 9 Traffic Controls for Bicycle Facilities. These treatments draw upon creative solutions in use in other locations in California, other States, and European cities. You can view or download the September 2003 Draft adopted by the Interdepartmental Staff Committee on Traffic and Transportation (ISCOTT).
