Introduction

The Village of Altamont has been proactive in improving the quality of life for its residents and commercial partners. In 2006, the Village completed their Comprehensive Plan that included an extensive public involvement component. Maintaining existing linkages between neighborhoods and community amenities such as parks, gardens, and village scale shopping, and expanding on such linkages, has been and continues to be an area of emphasis in the Altamont community as it strives to build upon the historical model of village life even as its stature as a residential community of choice increases in the 21st century. To further enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike, the Village of Altamont has contracted with Alta Planning + Design to create a Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan to guide the development of bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

The Plan will:

  • Establish and expand the bicycle and pedestrian linkages between the Village’s primary destinations and neighborhoods within the Village with the creation of a non-motorized network plan.
  • Build upon recommendations in the Village’s Comprehensive Plan to promote a safe and attractive bicycle and pedestrian atmosphere while maintaining the vitality of the unique/historic character of the Village.
  • Quantify existing Village bicycle and pedestrian resources and outline priorities for their expansion. Existing gaps in the system should be reviewed and prioritized.
  • Identify potential transit and multi-modal nodes for the establishment of a functional non-motorized transit system in the Village;
  • Develop a method for the Village to prioritize future bicycle and pedestrian capital projects with planning level cost estimates
  • Identify potential funding sources that would assist the Village in funding future bicycle and pedestrian capital projects.
  • Involve the public in the planning process to ensure consensus and support.

Public Meetings

On Thursday January 8th, the second public meeting of the planning process will be held at the Village Community Room, 115 Main Street at 7pm. We will be presenting the draft plan and soliciting feedback from the village residents before we present the Final Plan to the Village.
